9-1-1

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. –Jeremiah 33:3 NIV

When experiencing a medical crisis or catastrophic physical injury, your first instinct is to call 9-1-1. You are confident that soon you’ll hear sirens and see flashing lights signaling a rescue. The quick response and competent care of the paramedic is invaluable—often lifesaving. Still, when the emergency has passed and life resumes to normalcy, it’s easy to slip back into complacency. You are grateful and even somewhat awestruck for the help; yet, having the emergency personnel over for a barbecue, or calling for a lengthy heart-to-heart seems almost silly. It’s not that kind of relationship. Are you guilty of using God like a paramedic/ambulance? Desperately calling for help in an emergency, then quickly moving on and returning to your own agenda when the crisis has passed. God wants to be so much more than the first one you call in an emergency. He desires to be not only your Savior but also your most intimate relationship—your best Friend! Why not? He has all the qualities of a friend and more. He loves listening to you. He hears your thoughts—sit early in the morning and have a cup of coffee with only Him. “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly” (Psalm 5:3 NIV). He says, “Call me,” and means it. He desires to know your dreams and even share His own secrets with you. Most of all, His love is unconditional, to the point that He laid down His life for you.
