Salt Their Oats

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. –Romans 12:18 NIV

When we have words with someone, misunderstandings may occur. What we have said is not what they have heard; what we meant to say is not what was understood. We reason that it’s their problem—right? After all, they shouldn’t be so touchy—right? They can just get over it—right? WRONG! We can pretend that it doesn’t bother us. We can even pretend that the misunderstanding isn’t constantly on our minds. But, in reality, it’s always in our face. If these feelings go ignored long enough, our hearts harden. We become callous and bury the relationship alongside all of our other dead connections.

What if we gave pride a day off? What if we gave up our so-called “rights”? What if we immediately, whether it’s our fault or not, apologized? What if making peace became more important than standing our ground? Jesus said, “Blessed are the peace MAKERS” (Matthew 5:9 NIV). Peace doesn’t just happen by itself. It’s hard work! We must pursue peace, making it a goal every day of our lives. We must not let misunderstandings become roots of bitterness. As far as it depends on us, let us be at peace with everyone. If we salt the horse’s oats with love, we can even make him drink. Let’s lead everyone to the waters of peace.

prayer focuses

Lord, help me to be slow to speak, quick to hear, and even quicker to forgive.

Lord, I know that pride goes before destruction. Help me to be humble and more like You each day.
