So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. –Matthew 24:44 NIV
If you grew up in the Midwest, you know that there are certain things you must do to get ready for winter. You purchase extra supplies for the inevitable times when ice and snow prevent you from venturing out. You keep your gas tank full, and you always carry a shovel and a blanket in the trunk. You also have rock salt or kitty litter on hand in order to get out of snow drifts when stuck. Preparation is crucial, whether you're dealing with snow storms up north or hurricane seasons down south. Yet, there are different types of storms we'll all encounter throughout the year. Are we ready for spiritual storms? Imagine waiting until the blizzard has hit before considering how to get ready for it. Yet, we often do just that when it comes to spiritual storms. John 16:33 tells us that in this world we will have troubles, but it also encourages us to take heart because Jesus has overcome the world. Matthew 24:44 tells us that Jesus will come at an hour when we won’t expect him, so we must get ready. If we’re smart enough to prepare for earthly storms, we should be wise enough to prepare for the spiritual storms that will surely come. As we give our hearts and lives to God, becoming rooted and grounded in His Word, and letting our prayer life speak louder than words, we will be ready. The maker of the storm is our refuge and our strength.
Father, help me to be as prepared for eternity as I am for life on earth. Remind me that life is temporary and that You are eternal. Keep me always ready.
Thank You, Father, for giving me wisdom to focus on what’s important and what isn’t. I trust You to guide me through every storm.
