But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? –1 John 3:17 ESV
In life, there are people who give generously and others who don’t or think they can’t. However, everyone has something to offer, whether it’s money, time, or even just donations from simply cleaning out their closets. Instead of comparing ourselves to what another person gives, we should focus on giving from our heart and not attempt to compete with each other. For there are so many people in need in our world. Our Father in Heaven was the original Giver—He gave His only Son. We can follow God’s example of giving and ask the Holy Spirit to lead us to know what we can give to others. A Christ-like life is a witness of God’s love, particularly when we are generous to those in need. James 2:15-16 (NIV) says, “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” Also, Matthew 10:42 (NIV) tells us, “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” We should not worry about building our treasures here on earth but in eternity. Let us choose to demonstrate the same generosity that God shows us by choosing to give to others whatever the Holy Spirit puts on our heart to give!
Ask the Lord to help you have a generous heart.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to lead you in recognizing the needs of others.
