…in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. –Philippians 2:3-4 NIV
Today, the desire to have separate time and space from other people has birthed itself into elaborate Man Caves and She Sheds. These distinct areas are well-stocked and electronically enhanced to provide a retreat from the demands of work and home, while providing that all-important “me time.” Mostly the terms are word play, but with all the division in the world today, maybe what we need—especially in the church—is an attitude that guards against division, focuses less on our needs, and gives more attention to caring for others. Instead of a “me-first” mentality, Philippians 2:2-4 gives us a different view of the community of faith. Verses 5-8 provide an inspiring and vivid portrayal of what it means to prioritize someone else's well-being over our own. Jesus, as the ultimate example, willingly set aside His rightful privileges to prioritize our welfare over His own comfort, convenience, and self-interest. Of course, relationships are often difficult and require give and take to make them work, but when we learn to put others first and consider their needs before our own, we will find our connections with people becoming deeper and more satisfying than any “Me Shed” could ever be.
God, help me to see beyond my own needs and show Your love to those around me.
Jesus, thank You for putting my needs before Your own. Help me to do the same for someone today.
