The Best Gift

And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. –Ephesians 5:2 NIV

The only time my mother ever came to my school was when I was in the first grade. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to come; she couldn’t because she worked. She took the day off from work that day to bring cupcakes for my birthday. She looked so beautiful wearing high heels and a black and white checkered two-piece skirt set. My mom rarely ever wore a dress since she worked in a factory. All I usually saw her in were jeans and a sweatshirt. But this day, she looked like Jackie Kennedy.

Many things have happened in my life, but the sacrifice she made to be there that day meant the world to me. The gift of time was the best gift ever. Never underestimate how much others appreciate you taking the time to put them first to make them feel valued. A trip to Disney or Universal Studios might be great, but putting the phone down and listening with all your attention can often be greater. Memories don’t come with a price tag, and you can’t buy them online.

Our Lord Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice in coming to us, demonstrating His great love for both you and me. He, in turn, wants us to walk in His love and be there for others. Don’t let the daily grind get in the way of life. Make memories.

prayer focuses

Lord, help me to be sensitive to the needs of others and to be generous with my time, showing them that they are greatly valued.

Lord, help me to walk in your love as I interact with others today.
