A Gentle Heart

You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. –1 Peter 3:4 NLT

There are many verses in scripture urging us to be gentle. Philippians 4:5 (NIV) says “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” Given this verse, you might wonder what a gentle heart looks like to the people around you. When you trust in God, you develop inner beauty that is tender and kind, shining through to the outside. Change becomes apparent as you seek after the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT): “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”

It is not always easy to be gentle and quiet. But, as you embrace the wonderful qualities in Galatians 5, you’ll begin to experience a transformation. Your heart is the key. Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV) tells you, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” The process involves praying, meditating, and faithfully seeking God in His Word. That is all He requires; the rest will follow.

prayer focuses

Pray that the Lord will help you to identify instances when you have not been gentle, and give you the strength to become more tender and more kind.

Ask the Holy Spirit to produce in you the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit.
