But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. –Matthew 23:12 NLT
A person who is humble is neither proud nor haughty, neither arrogant nor assertive. How does that explanation of humility translate into your Christian walk? Are you genuinely sorry when you sin against God and others as you put your own needs first? Do you readily forgive when others offend you? Do you unconsciously view yourself above others?
In today’s world, pride, rather than humility is associated with strength. But a humble spirit is not a weakness; it is something beautiful, reflecting a Christ-like life. It involves living life in unity with our Savior, Jesus—the greatest embodiment of humility. It is hard to comprehend Jesus’s willingness to leave the glory of Heaven and come down to earth in order to take humankind’s deserved punishment upon Himself.
Jesus said in Matthew 16:24 (NLT), “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.” Strive to forgive, and be ready to apologize and genuinely repent for every sin you commit. When you seek a humble heart, you will be blessed, as Psalm 149:4 (NLT) says, “For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.”
Ask God to give you a humble heart.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to examine your heart for areas of false pride.
