“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” —Proverbs 4:23 NLT
The Bible is filled with God’s wisdom for how we should think and what we should think about. So many of the life stories of the Old Testament--especially Proverbs as well as much of Jesus’ teachings--clearly illustrate the consequences of misbeliefs and wrong thinking. Yet our human nature seems to be bent toward beliefs and thoughts that lead to difficulties and suffering in our lives. We move in the direction of our thoughts whether toward God or away from Him. While what we choose to believe colors our every thought, the thoughts we hold in our minds form what we believe to be true. We have to guard our heart from believing anything contrary to what God says is true and thinking anything that is not aligned with His will. The apostle Paul tells us, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV).If there was ever a time in our lives when we need to carefully manage our thoughts, it’s right now! It’s just too easy to dwell on the difficult situations we are facing and begin believing the dire predictions of those who don’t put their faith in the power of the Living God. We can’t always control the thoughts that come into our minds, but we can choose which ones we allow to linger.“...Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise" (Philippians 4:8 NLT).
Meditate on this verse: “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think“ (see Romans 12:2 NLT).
Lord, please give me the strength to manage my thoughts and think about what pleases You and leads me in the direction of Your will for my life.
