If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. –1 Corinthians 13:2 NLT
We see it every day. The woman in front of you speaks rudely to the cashier thinking that she’s more important than the cashier. An angry man gives a hand signal in traffic; you know the one. Nasty words—from people hiding behind a computer screen—posted all over social media cutting down someone’s heartfelt post. Worse yet, you’ve been one of these people. How have we become so calloused? Is it easier to be mean or grumble at those we encounter? Is it really that hard to just be kind? Just think about the domino effect our little thoughtless action can have. The concept of pay-it-forward can go both ways. Negativity and hurt feelings spread like wildfire, but so can kindness and joy. Wouldn’t you rather be responsible for lighting up a room or someone else’s day with a smile, kind word, and a little grace? God calls us to love others—and doing that doesn’t include judgment, angry fits, and careless words. So the next time you feel inconvenienced or annoyed by someone, stop, smile at them, and ask God to give you grace. Practice choosing kindness with everyone you encounter. At the end of the day, even you will feel better!
Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with patience, grace, and compassion for others.
Ask God to soften your heart and challenge you with opportunities to cultivate kindness and love to others.
