Stop judging by mere appearances... –John 7:24 NIV
Do you find yourself jumping to conclusions? At the checkout line, a woman cuts in front of you with a huge cartload of groceries. You have trouble hiding the look of annoyance on your face as that “rude” customer pays her enormous grocery bill. You have no idea that she is rushing to get home in order to prepare the funeral luncheon for a dear friend who has just passed away. Perhaps you might have helped her bring the groceries to the car if you had known.
Having a limited view of such actions prevents you from understanding and responding in a way that pleases God. When feeling wronged, you miss opportunities to be a blessing to those who are most in need. Subsequent feelings of resentment and anger negatively impact your walk with the Lord.
“Therefore, judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart” (1 Corinthians 4:5 NIV). It is vital to resist the urge to make assumptions regarding the motives of others. Instead, look within these situations for opportunities to be a blessing.
Pray for God’s wisdom to resist making assumptions or ascribing wrong motives to those you encounter.
Pray for insight into ways to encourage those around you throughout the day.
