So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind was boisterous, he was afraid…. –Matthew 14:29-30 NKJV
In this portion of Scripture, Jesus had come down from the mountain after a time of solitude and prayer. The disciples had left in their boat to go to the other side of the sea from where Jesus had been preaching. Jesus needed to get to the boat so he could get to the other side as well, but the boat was already in the middle of the sea being tossed by the wind and waves. So Jesus walked on the water to get to the boat. Peter, intrepid as he was, asked the Lord to command him to walk on the water too. Jesus said, “Come.” Peter got on the water and walked toward Jesus, but when he turned his focus on the storm and on the magnitude of the waves, he began to sink. Peter in his fear called out, “Jesus save me!” Jesus stretched out His hand and saved him. What storms in your life are you focusing on that are drowning you in helplessness and in despair? Reach out to Jesus. He waits for you to call out to Him and say, “Help me!” Jesus will stretch out His powerful hand and lift you out of your troubled waters.
Lord, help me to stay focused on You always when I go through the storms of life.
Holy Spirit, give me the power, strength, and wisdom to be an overcomer in times of duress.
