Harpoon Resistant

This is the confidence we have approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he will hear us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. –1 John 5:14-15 NIV

When told he could have anything his heart wanted, Solomon asked for wisdom. His heart was pure and honest in that request. Because of that, God also gave him wealth and power beyond his imagination.

What might you have asked for? Proverbs 22:4 (NLT) says, “True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.” Would you request a humble heart with the ability to live above your emotions, to love unconditionally, and to avoid being sidetracked by hurt feelings? In this life, offenses occur. As surely as the sun will rise tomorrow, someone will go out of their way to offend each of us. Is it possible to be so secure in God’s love (and not self-conscious) that we are not destroyed when others harpoon us? Is it possible, in the face of adversity, to sincerely pray as Jesus did, “Father forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34 NLT)? Forgiveness is one of the single most difficult things the Father asks us to do. It only becomes possible when, with a humble heart, we are willing to surrender all—including our pride. So, pray for humility. It not only leads to riches, honor, and a long life, but it comes with a bonus: “…with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2 NLT). You will be harpoon resistant.

prayer focuses

Pray that the Lord will give you an awareness of areas of pride in your life that need to be eradicated.

Ask the Lord for a humble heart that does not take offense.
