How to Gain It All

Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. –Deuteronomy 10:14 ESV

Have you ever noticed that when you go on vacation, you feel as though you haven’t got a care in the world? Then, as the time to go home approaches, you begin to feel weighed down again. Why? On vacation, you aren’t responsible for the landscape; gardeners do it. You don’t have to cook, clean, or do laundry; chefs and housekeepers do it all. If your rental car breaks down, someone else has to pay to fix it, not you.The truth is that all of the things we work to possess, and their upkeep, are the very things that possess us. Every toddler instinctively knows how to say, “mine!” But in reality, we don’t own anything. We come into this world with nothing, and we’ll leave with nothing. Everything we think we own will pass on to someone else. What we hold onto so tightly, we eventually lose. However, what if we lived life thankful for our blessings while holding them with open hands? When we give everything to God, we can live every day with the same attitude that we have on vacation—nothing weighs us down. When we recognize that everything belongs to the Lord and we stop trying to possess everything, only then will we be free.

prayer focuses

Lord, help me to realize that everything I possess belongs to You.

Help me to stop worrying about possessions. Thank You, Lord, for the countless gifts that You are allowing me to use during my lifetime.
