Immediate Obedience

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. –Matthew 4:19-20 NIV

How often do you obey God IMMEDIATELY? If Jesus spoke to you today and told you to drop what you’re doing and follow Him, would you go at once?

In Matthew chapter 4, we see two pictures of obedience that are immediate. In verses 19-20, when Jesus called Simon (Peter) and Andrew to come, they dropped their nets AT ONCE and followed Him. In verses 21-22, Jesus called James and John who also left their boat IMMEDIATELY to follow Him.

There have probably been many times in life when you prayed for something, yet didn’t want to obey the command that God had given you in response. Imagine the results if you did exactly what the Lord told you to do, no questions asked. Simon and Andrew didn’t have a rebuttal for Jesus. James and John didn’t tell Jesus, “Hold on, I plan to follow You, but I just want to try my way first.”

We must strive to obey God immediately, knowing that “Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Proverbs 16:20 NIV). Then, we must pray truthfully as King David did, “I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands” (Psalm 119:60 NIV).

prayer focuses

Pray that you will hear God’s will for your situation.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will, through His power, help you complete whatever tasks God has set before you, without delay.
