(Jesus said,) “…Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it....I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you...” –Matthew 11:28-29 MSG
Have you heard the song “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”? The title speaks of God’s greatness and that nothing compares to His supremeness. His view of the world extends beyond our limited scope. Although God fashioned us in His image, He made us lower than Himself.
Sometimes we inadvertently switch roles with God. We take on tasks that are not ours, we try to fix things that are beyond our control, and we try to handle God’s work without Him. Instead of God holding the “whole world in His hands,” one may become the embodiment of the statue of the man carrying the world on his shoulders. We become tired and heavy-laden, as though we are bearing the weight of the world on our shoulders. Why? It is a consequence of us moving beyond the boundaries God established for our lives.
We must recognize that God doesn’t call us to do everything. Rather, He beckons us to be responsible for what He has entrusted to our care. If we’ve been overwhelmed lately—before the cares of this world break us—we need to take a break with Jesus. He will help us to recover our lives and free us up from responsibilities that are not ours to shoulder.
Pray that God would reveal to you what things you need to set aside that has overwhelmed you.
Ask the Holy Spirit to replenish you so you can carry on in the good works God has established for your life.
