It’s Not About the Bread

When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. –Matthew 16:5 NIV

Have your kids ever called you from school and said, “Hey, I forgot my lunch. Can you bring it? ”Jesus and His disciples had left the eastern shores of the Sea of Galilee and were now on the other side in Magdala. Tired and hungry from a long trip across the lake, they realize they forgot their lunch. Jesus overhears their conversation and uses it as a teachable moment: “‘Be careful,’ Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees’” (Matthew 16:6 NIV).When we read Matthew 15, we will find that the disciples had just witnessed two of Jesus’ greatest miracles. He reminds them, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?” (Matthew 15:8 NIV). They had just fed more than 5,000 people with two loaves of bread plus another 4,000 with seven loaves. He also was trying to warn them of false teaching by the religious rulers. Those thick-headed disciples can give us hope for redemption, just as Jesus takes the time to teach us in His Word. How often do we doubt and forget God’s miracles and provision—not only in big ways but in our everyday life. Let us take time to read the Bible and learn what He has to say to us.

Lord, help me to be teachable.

Open my eyes and ears to Your Holy Spirit. Give me revelation to things that are in plain sight.
