In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry. –Jonah 2:2 NIV
The story of Jonah is an amazing Bible story that we often tell our children, but in many ways forget how relevant it is to today. The prophet Jonah was called by God to go and share God’s message of repentance and forgiveness to the Ninevites who were not godly people. They worshiped many false gods and did evil things, yet God was still calling out to the Ninevites. God wanted them to know Him as their God too. This made Jonah angry. He let his anger and self-righteousness keep him from obeying the Lord. You probably know how the story goes. Jonah tries to go his own way and winds up onboard a ship. God allows a great storm to come upon them. The people on the ship go to Jonah and ask him what he’s done and beg him to cry out to his God. Jonah is eventually thrown overboard into the horrible storm, and God sends a whale to rescue him. After many hours, Jonah is spit out onto the dry sand of Nineveh, right where God wanted him.
God, help soften my heart to be obedient to where and to whom You lead me.
Thank You that You are my Sovereign Lord and that You have mercy on all who call upon Your name.
