One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?” Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” –John 5:5-6, 8 NLT
Jesus asked the invalid man if he wanted to get well. The man responded with excuses. However, Jesus said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” Instantly the man received physical healing. He stood up, picked up his mat, and walked onward just as Jesus instructed him to do.
Some people prefer to remain in their condition because they are unwilling to take the steps necessary to become well. Many of God’s children are physically well but crippled in spirit. Inwardly, they are bleeding from past hurts and oppressive, or even suicidal, thoughts. Others have hardened hearts or seared consciences due to unconfessed sin. Regardless of the reason for their desolate condition, they’re in need of healing so that they can live the Spirit-filled lives God desires.
If you are praying for healing, Jesus is asking, “Do you want to get well?” If your response is a whole-hearted “yes,” then you need to listen for His guidance and pursue the appropriate help required to become whole. Only then will you be able to get up, move forward, and enjoy life.
If you have been feeling down for some time, ask God to give you the desire to become well and to point you in the direction of help.
Let the Holy Spirit know that the desire of your heart is to become well and whole and that you need His help in doing so.
