Rather, I toughen my body with punches and make it my slave so that I will not be disqualified after I have spread the Good News to others. –1 Corinthians 9:27 GW
Have you ever stopped to think about how we are at war with our own flesh every day? Our spirit is willing, but our flesh is weak. We wake up and our spirit says, “It’s a great day; let’s go for a walk.” However, our flesh says, “Seriously…hit the snooze button. We’ll start tomorrow.” We decide to make healthier choices concerning food, and suddenly our bodies turn into the Cookie Monster screaming, “Cookie, cookie, cookie!” Our spirit longs for discipline, yet our bodies act like a spoiled two-year-old throwing a temper tantrum. If we wouldn’t tolerate that kind of behavior from our child, why do we allow our flesh to get away with it? When our bodies don’t want to do what our spirit knows it needs to do, we should simply tell it to shut up, get up, and get busy. In Christ we have authority over our flesh, and we are no longer slaves to it. Hebrews 12:11 (NIV) says, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”Hard, yes. Impossible, no. Proclaim, all things are possible in Christ. As we go into 2021, let us commit to being disciplined in Christ.
Our flesh is lazy, but our spirit is ever ready to work for God.
Ask God to help you hear and obey Him, not your flesh. Pray for the strength to take authority over your flesh. Refuse to give it room. Be led by the Spirit of the Living God.
