Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. –Matthew 11:28 NIV
We first learn about rest in the story of Creation found in the book of Genesis (spoiler alert: it was NOT the big bang). In the beginning, the Earth was a watery, formless planet suspended in darkness with no sun, stars, or other planets. On day one, “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3 NIV). He separated the light from the dark, and the earth began rotating. On day two, He formed Earth’s atmosphere, separating the waters into two parts: oceanic and subterranean water and atmospheric water. On day three, dry land and oceans appeared. Subterranean springs and mists watered the land’s surface. Vegetation and seed-bearing plants and trees that produced fruit appeared. On day four, the sun, moon, stars, and planets were formed. The moon began to mark time with months, seasons, and years. On day five, water creatures of every kind and birds were created. On day six, land animals, Adam, and then Eve (from Adam) came into being. After the incredible complexity of creation, on the seventh day, God rested. In His infinite wisdom, He knew when it was time to take a break.
The Lord has always understood the importance of rest. He urges each of us with loving words: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:29-30 NIV).
Father, help me to learn how to rest in You.
Father, I stand in awe of Your creation and the mighty works of Your hands. You are worthy of all praise and honor!
