Jesus does not ask us to be powerful, influential, or popular. That does not interest Him at all. On earth, He spent a large amount of time with the nobodies. Shepherds were the first to hear the good news of Jesus’ birth. Shepherds who were looked down upon and disrespected. As an adult, Jesus hung out with the lost and broken who were hated by many. Jesus also spent time with prostitutes and other sinners. People that others wanted nothing to do with. They were objects to be used and abused, but Jesus spoke value and dignity into them. Look at the people Jesus selected as His disciples. Among the twelve disciples, there was a tax collector who worked for the Roman government, a zealot who engaged in politics and anarchy, a number of fishermen, and a thief. Jesus respected and empowered women—something that was viewed as dishonorable in His time. Still, with these people Jesus changed the world. Even if you feel like a nobody, you are somebody to Jesus. Somebody He was willing to give His life for. Someone He values and loves more than you’ve ever known. Jesus delights in nobodies, because they aren’t nobodies to Him.
