Day 316: Sheep Need a Shepherd

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.…For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. –Luke 2:8,11 KJV‬‬

Did you ever wonder why the shepherds were chosen to be the first to know that Jesus was born? Their duties consisted of much more than minding the sheep. The shepherds protected their sheep from predators along with finding good grazing grounds and clean water for them. Shepherds knew their sheep. Even when one went missing, they would search diligently until it was found. Sheep would often give birth on a steep slope to give them a clear view of impending danger. However, it was the shepherd who had to retrieve the little lamb, as it was unable to traverse the rocky terrain alone. In Luke 2:8, it also says the shepherds were “abiding in the field,” keeping watch over the sheep. “Abide” means to remain or continue to stay, even in the dark of night. God knew those shepherds would be awake, watching and not giving up until they found the Lamb. God knew that they wouldn’t mind a smelly stable filled with straw and animals. They had to find this Savior whom the angels said would bring peace and goodwill to all! It was only fitting that the shepherds would not only find our sacrificial Lamb but also our Shepherd!
