The Lord bless you… –Numbers 6:24 NIV
It’s normal to hear Christians pray for the “blessing” of God as if it’s a tangible gift to receive or an answer to some long-awaited request. While there are always earthly things we want and should turn to God for, those aren’t the real and enduring “blessings” of God. Ephesians begins with the solid affirmation that as His children, the Father “has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3 NIV). The word “blessed” is in the past tense in that sentence and the implication is clear. Our greatest blessings have already been given to us through our relationship with Christ. Everything we truly need is found in God. Because we are joined with Him through faith, our blessing from Him is full and complete; and because it is of Him, we “lack no good thing” (Psalm 34:10 NIV). So as you look around at your life that may seem lacking in a lot of ways, remember that you have been given “new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” and are already in possession of “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade” (1 Peter 1:3-4 NIV).
God, open my eyes to see Your real blessings and give me a true heart of gratitude.
Jesus, remind me every day that my best and greatest blessing is always YOU!
