For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it. –Luke 14:28 NKJV
Thank goodness for credit cards, right? Credit seems to have weaseled its way into money management. The financial industry emphasizes the importance of maintaining a good credit score. It determines our interest rates when buying cars and whether we can get a loan for a home. Even employers may or may not hire us based on our credit scores. A three digit number seems to be part of a ruling force that determines what we can and cannot materially obtain. Most financial gurus will say pay debt off as fast as possible, yet also say to use credit cards to maintain or raise your credit score—as long as you are paying the debt off right away. Somewhat confusing. Jesus has an alternate view about debt. There are many Bible verses regarding finances. He says to work with what we have, plan for what we need, and don’t become a slave to the lender (see Proverbs 22:7). With the Bible’s financial advice, we can be free and successful having our needs provided, save for our dreams, and give back to our community.
If you are in debt, pray for guidance and a plan to get rid of it and create a budget to stay free in the future.
Always go to God when you need advice about appropriating your funds, especially with big-purchase decisions.
