So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. –John 8:36 NLT
July 4th celebrates the thirteen American colonies that formed a new nation, the United States of America, as they declared separation from the British Empire. On this day, we commemorate our country’s independence—our great American heritage. We should never take that freedom for granted, as it was not without a price. Each of us ought to be grateful for the men and women who gave their lives to keep our country free.
Jesus has made available a freedom that is infinitely more valuable than political freedom. Through faith in what Jesus did for us by His death and resurrection, we are granted spiritual freedom—victory over sin and darkness. As Colossians 1:13-14 (NLT) tells us, “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.” This freedom is never-ending.
Independence Day is a symbol of liberty. We are grateful for it, but even more grateful for our spiritual liberty made possible by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for us. He loves us that much!
Thank the Lord for the men and women who gave, as well as those who continue to give, their lives so that we might enjoy our freedom!
Thank the Lord for our spiritual freedom, which is made possible through the sacrifice of our dear Lord and Savior.
