Hezekiah was the thirteenth King of Judah. He was a righteous ruler. In 2 Kings 18:5-7, we learn that the Lord was with this king, and He prospered him in all that he did. Hezekiah lived his life according to the commandments and precepts of God, as King David did before him. There had not been such a righteous king as him since King David’s reign.As the years passed, King Hezekiah became ill. In 2 Kings 20, we learn that the Lord instructed the prophet Isaiah to relay a message to King Hezekiah. The king was told to “put his house in order” because he was ill unto death and would not recover.In his grief over the devastating news, King Hezekiah humbly turned his face to the wall and cried bitterly. He was still a young man, and he was not yet ready to die. He reminded the Lord of his life of obedience, faithfulness, and devotion to God. Then, hearing Hezekiah’s prayer, with mercy and compassion, the Lord healed the king and added an additional fifteen years to his life.What are we to do when we are given devastating news? It could be financial ruin, a terminal illness, or a broken relationship. Whatever it is, we are to turn to the Lord King Jesus, crying out to Him with all that is within us. We must not give in to fear when given devastating news. God is the author of our lives, and we are safe and secure in His loving arms, here on earth, and in Heaven. He has the last word.
