Who Needs a DeLorean

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” –Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

Back to the Future is a movie about a teenager who was accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean automobile. Who among us hasn’t, at one time or another, wished to know the future or longed to go back and change the past? The problem with even looking to the future is that we’re too busy holding on to the rejections, mistakes, and poor decisions from long ago. It takes courage to face the past, learn from it, and then be willing to go through the process of inner healing.

We must stop holding on to the pain and living in the past. Jeremiah 29:11 promises us hope and a future. We can’t jump in our DeLorean to change the past, nor can we visit the future. But we can plan for the future with a fresh, new attitude today, learning from the past and living in the present. It’s a new day every morning. With the Lord’s help and strength, we can start each day with a clean slate as we write the pages of our future. We can each become the person we were created to be. Our God is bigger than any problem we face. His love can overcome it all.

prayer focuses

Lord, help me to face my fears, let go of the past, and embrace the future.

Lord, help me to embrace each day as a new day and to let the past stay in the past.
