A White Stone

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it. –Revelation 2:17 NIV

What is the white stone in this Scripture passage from Revelation 2? During the era of history when Jesus and His disciples were alive, it was a Roman tradition that when a trial concluded, the judges would vote by casting a black or white stone into an urn. A black stone meant guilty, and a white stone meant innocence. In this passage, God is telling us that regardless of who we were before we came to Christ, what matters now is who we have become in Him. Jesus has cast a white stone on our behalf, affirming our full acquittal and release from our past sinful life. When the enemy sends his fiery darts our way, we can boldly tell him, “Jesus has already cast His vote. He has found me NOT GUILTY!” Jesus’ blood has freed us from our sins. Romans 8:31 (NIV) tells us, “…If God is for us, who can be against us?” In Revelation 2:17, God says that He will give us a new name. We are freed from our past and are new creations. Let us celebrate that we are declared innocent by Jesus’ blood!
