For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. –Isaiah
Have you ever been in a dark, unfamiliar place—wishing for a light or someone to guide you who knew where he was going? Nearly 700 years before the birth of Christ, God spoke through the prophet Isaiah and said, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned” (Isaiah 9:2 NIV). God knew that Someone needed to illuminate the way for those living in spiritual darkness, a Counselor who would lead them to the light. Isaiah himself was a trusted counselor of two kings of Israel. He advised these kings not to have unholy alliances with foreign nations but instead to put their trust in God in order to be saved from defeat by their enemies. While Isaiah was a wise counselor, he was still limited because he was human. But Someone was coming who was not limited! Hundreds of years later the Great Counselor would come—Jesus Christ. This Great Counselor would provide a way for the Gentiles to be saved along with the Jews. We need to choose to listen to the Great Counselor instead of going our own way. Let’s put off our unholy alliances and listen to Jesus, our Counselor!
Thank You, heavenly Father, for sending me a Counselor I can always trust!
Spend time with the Counselor; ask Him for instruction and guidance through the dark and unsure places in your life.
