Growing up in the 1960s, we saw the injustice and the tragedy behind the race riots and civil unrest. It wasn’t right then, and it’s not right now. Yesterday, while in St. Petersburg, Florida, there was an event that was a sermon in itself. There were no news crews and no television cameras, and most people probably missed the incident all together.A car had “died” in a very busy intersection. Other drivers were zooming around the car honking and yelling. Two strangers pulled into a parking lot, got out of their cars, and ran toward the stranded motorist. Together they pushed the car through the intersection. The traffic kept moving, ignoring these two brave men who were risking their lives to help someone they didn’t even know. Who were the men? One was a Black mailman still in his uniform, the other a young White guy. There was no racial division, just two men working together for the common good.We are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love our neighbor as ourselves (see Matthew 22:37-39). When we obey these two commands, we fulfill the will of God. Those two men preached a wordless sermon in a matter of minutes—may we all listen to its meaning.
