When a ship is about to set out on a voyage, the call is given, “All ashore who’s going ashore!” If we don’t heed the warning, we’ll be taking a trip we didn’t plan on taking, a costly mistake.Wouldn’t it be nice if when we’re about to say or do something unwise, we’d hear a booming voice warning us that we’re about to make a very costly mistake? We’ve all made bad choices and taken costly trips we never intended to take. If we were to be totally honest with ourselves, we usually knew we were making a bad choice—but we found a way to justify our behavior.No big booming voice has to proclaim a warning because the still small voice of the Holy Spirit is always there speaking to our hearts. It’s up to us to listen. The Holy Spirit can stop us from taking a journey that doesn’t end like we’d hoped. The only problem is that we often ignore His warning, and it’s only when the ship is about to sink that we’re willing to admit we were wrong.Instead, let us heed His warning, get off the ship before it sinks, and intently listen to that still small voice inside us.
