He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. –Proverbs 16:32 NKJV
Are we constantly blaming our mistakes on others or things outside of our control? We need to conquer the things within us. As it says in Luke 17:21 (NKJV), “the kingdom of God is within you.” All our battles are within. There are layers to our battles, and the Holy Spirit will unravel them if we trust in Him.The desire to blame others for our problems seems to be ingrained in us from the beginning—just as Adam and Eve blamed Satan and each other for their mistakes in the Garden of Eden. When something rubs us the wrong way, do we get upset and allow emotions to control our behavior? Instead, we should pause and pray for spiritual guidance from the Holy Spirit. When we get right on the inside, we get right on the outside. Our reaction to the problem is so important. A.W. Tozer in his book The Pursuit of God writes, “Why do some persons ‘find’ God in a way that others do not? The one vital quality which they have in common was spiritual receptivity. Something in them was open to heaven, something which urged them Godward.” Our spirits hear God when we quiet our minds enough to meditate on Him.
Just as David sat before the Lord, enjoying His presence and quieting his spirit in 2 Samuel 7:18, so we should sit before Him and enjoy His presence.
With the Holy Spirit’s leading, you can work on you. You can’t change someone else, only God can.
