See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit…. –Colossians 2:8 NRSV
It is popular in today’s culture to be tolerant, or inclusive. It’s considered sophisticated to believe that there are “many” paths to a god of your choice—a higher power. Everyone is going to a “better place.” “I’m okay, you’re okay.” These false religions won’t often reject Jesus Christ completely, but they make Him just a step into a “deeper” philosophy, self-actualization, or a holistic lifestyle. It can be confusing for a new believer. The best way to recognize counterfeit is to be overly knowledgeable of the real thing. Get to know Jesus through God’s Word. Self-help books are great and topical life studies are awesome; but to know the true and living God, look to His Word. The Bible reveals God’s character and His plan for you. Through reading and studying Scripture you become so intimately familiar with Him that you can confidently declare, as Paul did, that “Christ is enough.” He is God; He made the world and He is the reason it exists. There is no need to look anywhere else for your salvation—it is found in the person of Jesus Christ. The true Gospel never changes—Christ died for your sins and rose from the dead. If you believe Him you will have everlasting life (John 3:16).
Thank God for His truth, His Gospel of grace, through Jesus Christ.
Ask Him to open your eyes to areas where you are being deceived and to follow only His truth.
