The people were…all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” –Luke 3:15-16 NIV
Jesus is the Living Expression of God. Luke 1:1-4 in the Passion translation of the Bible tells us that Jesus is defined as logos, a Greek word meaning “Word.” Jesus Christ is the eternal Word, the Creative Word, and the Word made visible. He is the divine self-expression of all that God is, contains, and reveals in incarnated flesh. Just as we express ourselves in words, God has perfectly expressed Himself in Christ. Clearly we see the humanity of Jesus as the servant of all and the sacrifice for all. Jesus broke down every barrier between Jew and Gentile, man and woman, rich and poor. Jesus is the Savior of all who come to Him.John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit even while in his mother’s womb. His father, Zechariah, was a Jewish priest who served in the temple, and his mother, Elizabeth, was a direct descendant of Aaron. John received a powerful message from God. He then went preaching and baptizing throughout the Jordan Valley. He fulfilled Isaiah 40:3-5, and he always challenged people to prepare for the coming Messiah. “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30 ESV).
Jesus was armed with the Holy Spirit.
Arm yourself with the Holy Spirit so that you can stand against the enemy. John the Baptist prepared the way for Christ. What are you doing to accomplish your purpose?
