Day 211: Bible Duo – Mary and Elizabeth

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. –Luke 1:41 NIV

Throughout the Bible, there are a number of important duos whose stories intertwine. Do you remember the stories of Mary and Elizabeth? Mary was a teenager who’d never known a man intimately, and Elizabeth was past the years of childbearing. In both instances, having a child seemed impossible. However, our Father God lives in the impossible. When Gabriel told Mary what the Lord had in store for her, can you imagine her state of wonder? What a daunting experience for someone so young. I find it interesting that we don’t hear anything about Mary having a heart-to-heart talk with her mother. In fact, she leaves home and goes to see her aunt, Elizabeth. Perhaps in the past, Elizabeth had been a shoulder for Mary to cry on. Maybe the reason these two women were chosen by God was because they had a kindred spirit. Perhaps their faith made God smile. Regardless of the reason, they encouraged one another.Mary stayed for six months caring for Elizabeth, leaving just before John was born. The bond between their babies began in the womb. Just as the mother of Jesus prepared the way for John by caring for his mother, so John prepared the way for Jesus. Mary and Elizabeth were soul sisters, a dynamic duo for God.
