…in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. –Philippians 2:3-4 NIV
Today, the desire to have separate time and space has birthed itself into elaborate Man Caves and She Sheds. These distinct areas are well-stocked and electronically enhanced to provide a retreat from the demands of work and home, while providing that all-important “me time.”Mostly the terms are word play, but with all the division in the world today, maybe what we need—especially in the church—is an attitude that guards against division, focuses less on our needs, and gives more attention to caring for others.Instead of a “me-first” mentality, Philippians 2:2-4 gives us a different view of the community of faith. And verses 5-8 follow with an amazing and graphic portrayal of what it looks like to value someone else more than yourself. Jesus essentially shelved everything that is rightfully His and placed our well-being above His comfort, above His convenience, and above any self-interest.Of course, relationships are often difficult and require give and take to make them work, but when we learn to put others first and consider their needs before our own, we will find our connections with people becoming deeper and more satisfying than any “Me Shed” could ever be.
God, help me to see beyond my own needs and show Your love to those around me.
Jesus, thank You for putting my needs before Your own. Help me to do the same for someone today.
