Day 6: In All Things…Not For All Things

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. –1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV

Have you ever stopped to think about the things we complain about? We pray for a job, get the job, and then complain about our workload, coworkers, and bosses. We pray for a spouse, find a spouse, and then complain about their habits that annoy us. We pray for children, have children, and then complain that they’re driving us nuts. We complain that it’s too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter; we’re never satisfied. Did you know that our brains have been trained, by us, to automatically take the negative or positive approach to every situation? Two people can be in the same dilemma—one sees the possibilities, and one sees the problems. So what’s the solution? We need to practice being thankful IN all things. We don’t have to be thankful FOR all things, but if we’re thankful IN all things, the attitude of gratitude reigns, which reveals the possibilities not the problems. Every day, in every situation, find something to be thankful for. Your job may be stressful, but thank God that you have one. Your kids may drive you crazy at times, but thank God that they’re healthy and happy. Practice thankfulness, and you won’t have time to complain.

prayer focuses

Practice being thankful.

Ask the Holy Spirit to convict you when you complain and give you wisdom to retrain your brain to praise instead.
