Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. –Luke 2:14 NIV
The song “Silent Night” is enjoyed each year during the Christmas season. It is one of the oldest and best-known Christmas carols. We all like to think of this beautiful picture of silent and calm. However, that evening was anything but a silent night. In the Gospel of Luke, he tells us that Mary and Joseph arrived in a small, overcrowded town where there was no room in the inn. Jesus’ birth takes place in a stable where He is put into a manger. Shepherds living in the region watching over their flocks see the Angel of the Lord appear, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. They were filled with fear, but the angel tells them He has good news—that day in the city of David a Savior has been born. Then suddenly a multitude of the heavenly host are praising God saying, “Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. ”Does this sound like a silent night? Our Lord came into this world on a mission. It may not have been silent, but it was the most significant moment in the history of the world.
Thanks be to God for sending His Son.
Chaos can reign; but if we seek Him, we can have peace.
