Day 171: Are You Ready for the Storm?

Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. –2 Timothy 4:2 NIV

Hurricane preparation: Anyone living along the southern coast of the United States knows the drill. Get essentials ready before the storm actually hits, or it may be too late.In 1 Samuel 25, there is a woman who was prepared in a big way. Abigail was married to a wealthy man with a bad attitude named Nabal. He was a mean man whose name fit his character—Nabal means fool (1 Samuel 25:25). A servant warned Abigail that a storm was coming her way, David’s men were out for revenge on her family, due to her husband’s unwillingness to show gratitude toward David for protecting his flocks and household from thieves. She intervenes and loads up her donkeys with a feast for David’s men. Abigail presents David and his men with “two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five seahs of roasted grain, a hundred cakes of raisins and two hundred cakes of pressed figs” (1 Samuel 25:18 NIV).Abigail kneels before David pleading with him and reminding him to let God avenge the wrong; and if David retaliates, his enemies’ blood will be on his own hands. David chooses mercy and thanks her for saving him from disaster.Let us always be prepared in every season of life, ready to provide and to guide with wisdom.

prayer focuses

Lord, help us to be ready at all times to avert evil from our lives.

May we not be found unprepared. Holy Spirit, thank You for Your wisdom. Help us not to base our decisions on feelings but to follow the example of Jesus.
