Day 175: Wanting What We Get

Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. –Hebrews 5:8 ESV

In prayer, what is our purpose, our objective? Is the goal of our prayers to get what WE want? Is it an attempt to get God to put the seal of approval on OUR will? Do we often treat God like a genie in a bottle who will grant us our every wish and command? Is prayer sometimes like a child making a wish list for Santa? What is the attitude behind the prayer? None one likes to go through hard times. Many posts on Facebook seem to be saying, “I just want to live a happy life with no strife and no pain.” Is that how we grow though? When is it that we mature and lean into the Father for love and support? What produces the character that we need to live a content life? Isn’t it in those times of strife and pain that we learn the most? I say a resounding, YES! So what should be our focus in prayer? How about instead of praying for what we want, we pray that God will give us the wisdom to want what we get? Isn’t His will the perfect will for us anyway?

prayer focuses

Search your soul and ask yourself the hard questions.

What is my purpose in prayer? Pray for the ability to want what you get, and to be okay with not getting everything you want.
