Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. –Proverbs 16:18 NIV
How do you react when you perceive that you have been wronged? This perception is initiated by the words, actions, and inactions of others. A close friend forgets to wish you a happy birthday. You are not properly thanked or acknowledged for the work you have done. Someone suggests “a better way” for you to accomplish something. Are you offended? Does this “offense” impact your ability to love? Does it affect your ability to think objectively? Your offense at such slights is rooted in pride. Pride is defined as a feeling of deep pleasure derived from one’s own achievements. Pride eliminates God from the equation, as satisfaction comes from reinforcing feelings of self-worth. But, as a Christian, you are now a child of God, and as such, your identity and worth are in Christ Jesus. Resist the sin of pride and its subsequent derailment of your ability to love and to think objectively. Be truly humble, not thinking less of yourself, but simply not thinking about yourself. Do not be a prisoner of pride. Refuse to take offense. “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2 NIV).
Pray for a deeper understanding of your worth in Jesus, and not in self-worth.
Pray that you will resist the urge to take offense.
