Day 35: Roller Coaster Mentality

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. –Hebrews 11:6 NIV

Life can often be just like a roller coaster ride if we live by our feelings. Emotions can plunge from fear to excitement, or to nausea and euphoria in seconds. They’re up one minute, down the next, and sometimes leaving us wondering if we’re right side up or upside down. It can be a wild ride if we let our emotions rule our hearts. Emotions are good, even God-given, but they are not a dependable barometer to live life by. Emotions lie! They tell us things aren’t as bad as they seem when they really are, or they tell us things are worse than they really are. Living by our emotions is exhausting. A roller coaster ride is fun, but would you want to continue riding it 24 hours a day? Determine in your heart what is truth, then filter your emotions through that truth. You rule your emotions, so don’t let them rule over you. We walk by faith, not feelings. Whatever feelings you’re having today, I pray that you will find the peace that passes all understanding. I pray that you will be able to discern the difference between truth and feelings. Don’t worry, you won’t have to do it alone—God is with you.

prayer focuses

When your emotions carry you away, pray.

When life seems upside down, pray. Let faith, not feelings, lead you. Seek council from a trusted friend, and let them help you discern feelings that aren’t true.
