Day 42: Who’s the Boss?

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. –Matthew 26:41 NIV

Have you ever stopped to think about how every day you’re at war with yourself? “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” For example, you wake up and your spirit says, “It’s a great day to go for a walk.” However, your body says, “Seriously? Hit the snooze button. We’ll talk about this tomorrow.” You decide to start making healthier choices concerning food, and your body turns into the Cookie Monster screaming, “Cookie, cookie!” Your spirit longs for discipline while your body acts like a two-year-old who falls limp to the ground in a temper tantrum. If we wouldn’t tolerate such behavior from a two-year-old, why do we give our flesh permission? When my body doesn’t want to do what I know it needs to do, I simply tell it to shut up, get up, and get busy. It works! All discipline seems painful for the moment, but in time it produces fruit we can be proud of. I recently heard a young woman say that she’d love to get in shape, but she loved food too much. Sad, because she’s given up the fight. Who’s your boss? In Christ there are no quitters.

prayer focuses

Don’t let your flesh rule you.

The flesh is lazy, selfish, and needy. Take control of your flesh by prayer. Don’t let it win. Discipline isn’t a bad word; ask the Father to help you discipline yourself. He’ll give you the strength.
