Day 126: The Ugliness of Loneliness

Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. –Psalm 62:8 NIV

“I hated seeing the Grand Canyon.” Why would anyone feel that way? Well, the fact is—most people would love to see it, but they just wouldn’t want to see it alone. The desperate need people have for relationships is never more evident than when they see something beautiful, even amazing; and yet, they have no one to share in the experience. The feeling of wonder is suddenly replaced with a vague, deep sadness. A sense of being utterly alone can take the beauty out of absolutely anything. Many people are blessed with friends and family, but not everyone. Some people feel as if they have no one. Even if your life is full of fantastic people, they won’t always be available to you. They will fail you, no doubt; it is part of being human. It is likely you know, with painful certainty, that people will not always be able to meet your needs. Regardless of your situation, the fact that God is an ever-present, relational-being brings a security and peace that is unmatched in any human relationship. This is especially true when we realize just how much He loves us!
