What Is Love?

Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. –1 Corinthians 13:13 NLT

There are so many misconceptions about what love is. Some people relate love with feelings and emotions. This is why there can be so many ups and downs in relationships. Love isn’t a feeling or an emotion. It is not being egotistical, selfish, or about always getting our way.God tells us, love is a choice: “So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline” (Colossians 3:12 MSG). Telling someone you love them are just empty words unless there is action. Love is a commitment. In order to show love like God intends, it is only possible through Him. As Philippians 4:13 (NIV) tells us, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Loving others is a call on our lives. We can’t fix every problem or have all the answers, but we can step into others’ lives just as Jesus stepped into ours on the Cross. The nails did not keep Him there—love did. It is easy to love the lovable but not to those who hurt us. Our sin hurt Jesus, but He forgave. This is our true example of love.

Father, help me to walk in loving obedience.

Holy Spirit, may Your love flow through me and grow me into a person who resembles You in all I say and do.
