Recapturing the Wonder

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. –Psalm 19:1-2 NIV

What’s your favorite thing to do on a beach vacation? Do you enjoy standing in the sand to marvel at the rising or setting of the sun over the vastness of the ocean? Or searching for and admiring the intricacies of the shells? Often the flurry of activity surrounding a vacation can distract you from the truly spectacular. There are so many clever achievements today that are worthy of notice. However, none can compete with the magnificence of God Himself. When you’re too caught up in your own existence, you can easily miss the truly glorious declaration of God’s beauty, majesty, and vastness demonstrated every day in a simple sunrise. God makes His splendor and power evident all around you, but gadgets and shiny baubles in your hands can distract your ability to appreciate Him. David’s words in Psalm 19 are a great reminder that the handiwork of the Lord decorates the created world, but you will miss Him if you don’t look up to notice what is truly glorious.
