Gumball Mentality

The righteous person many have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all. –Psalm 34:19 NIV

As a kid who didn’t love getting the plastic bubble filled with a cheap toy from the gumball machine? It was exciting to see the prize; perhaps it would be the illusive diamond ring. We all worry too much. We carry regrets from yesterday and borrow troubles from tomorrow. We’re so busy looking ahead that we miss the joy of today. When we worry about tomorrow, we end up worrying twice about the same thing when tomorrow becomes today. What if we lived life like those plastic bubbles in the gumball machine? What if we compartmentalized life into separate one-day segments? What if we lived each day as if it were the last and valued the gifts within each day? What if we focused on today and didn’t borrow grief from tomorrow? The result would be a much happier life, I’m sure. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers us out of them all (see Psalm 34:19). Worrying never changes anything for the better, but it can sure make life worse. Cast your cares upon the Lord, be anxious for nothing, and in everything, give thanks. Make each day special; celebrate the gift of life.

prayer focuses

When you’re worrying, ask God to fill you with His peace.

Read His Word, and let it encourage you.   Lord, help me to remember that this life is but a breath, and the momentary afflictions won’t matter in eternity. Please help me focus on that, not on my problems.
