Farmers believe they’ll harvest what they’ve sown—wheat for wheat, corn for corn—and so should you. Just as a farmer’s work has just begun when he plants seeds, the same is true for you when you and your spouse say, “I do.” After planting the seeds, he waters the grounds, removes the weeds, chases off the predators. This process continues even after the first buds pop through the dirt, because he knows the harvest isn’t ready yet. He continues to water the crop and chase off predators, waiting for the perfect timing. Then he reaps the harvest and begins again. In marriage, victory is not about obtaining the things you desire but about maintaining and maturing them. Just as the farmer continued in his field, so you must continue putting God first in your life. As you and your spouse grow closer to God, you’ll begin growing closer to each other. Through God’s empowering grace, when you see all that the Spirit has done in your life when you partner with Him, you will realize you have not worked at all but have lived a love story. And as you continue to put forth the effort, you can say, “I’m not working for nothing. I’m working toward greater enjoyment and victories in my marriage.”
